The Borno Police Command has detained 537 suspects, of whom 250 have been found guilty of rape, kidnapping, burglary, and other crimes in the State.
The arrests were made in the past three months in the state’s local councils of Jere, Monguno, and Shani as well as the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC).
According to Mohammed Yusuf, the commissioner of police, who announced the massive arrests made yesterday (Monday) in Maiduguri, “Of the total arrests, 339 were for public nuisance, 39 for burglary and theft, including 30 and nine for rape and kidnapping, respectively, in the four council areas. “
He also added that 135 suspects who had been arrested had been charged with a variety of crimes during the time period under consideration.
The police chief attributed the arrests and convictions to Governor Babagana Zulum’s recent accent of Borno State Penal Code Law 2023 and other related matters.
He stated, “These are a part of the Governor’s efforts to restore peace for a sustainable growth and development of the State.
It goes on to say that “the numerous arrests and convictions of suspects are to serve as deterrents and a warning to all criminally minded individuals.”
Lawan referred to a recent rape case when he claimed that on September 13, 2023, in Shani’s Gasi District, Hamisu Dauda allegedly committed a rape against Laraba Musa, 62.
In addition to raping the elderly woman, the suspect allegedly stole N42,700 from her pocket, the witness noted.
The police chief proclaimed, “They don’t have a place to carry out criminal activities in the state; nobody could escape the wrath of law.”
While in Monguno, he also revealed that Zarami Modu, 35, was stabbed by Umar Goni Abubakar, 25, for allegedly seducing his wife, Hajja Fantami, at a public water fountain.
Lawan also gave the program for Safer School Outreach (SSOR) to the state’s 27 Divisional Police Officers (DPOS).
