David Corenswet is the new Superman

After a lengthy casting process and lots of dead-end rumours, the cast of James Gunn’s new Superman movie has finally been revealed, with newcomer David Corenswet donning Kal-El’s iconic red and blue suit for 2025’s Superman: Legacy.

Superman: Legacy will mark the start of a new DC universe under Gunn and DC Studios co-boss Peter Safran’s supervision, and David Corenswet and Brosnahan have been roped in to play the important roles after a long search. He’ll star alongside Rachel Brosnahan, who’ll play the role of Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane in the DC movie.

According to Gunn, the film follows Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman as he learns to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, thanks to parents Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas.

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and begin filming in early 2024. While Gunn has found his Lois and Clark, the casting search continues for other iconic Superman characters like Lex Luthor and the superheroes The Authority, who are expected to make an appearance in the film before having their own eventually.

Replacing Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel (who confirmed he wasn’t returning to DC despite his cameo in Black Adam), Corenswet has a difficult task ahead, but he’s excited about it.

Though the actor has received acclaim for his breakthrough role on Netflix’s The Politician, he’s not as widely known yet.

Born on July 8, 1993, David Corenswet is a 29-year-old actor with experience mostly in TV series and streaming, having starred in several Netflix originals over the last few years.

The Juilliard graduate had his first paying acting job at nine years old, playing the little boy in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons in his hometown, Philadelphia.

When Corenswet first broke out on The Politician, the internet was abuzz with his resemblance to then-Superman Cavill. It was something he was aware of well before social media started pointing it out and a contributing factor in his desire to play the Man of Steel himself one day.

2022 proved a big year for Corenswet. He starred opposite Jon Bernthal and Josh Charles in David Simon’s latest HBO original series about corruption within the Baltimore police force, We Own This City. He starred as Lili Reinhart’s love interest, Jake, in one of two possible realities in Netflix rom-com Look Both Ways. And he also played a projectionist in cult horror fave Pearl opposite Mia Goth.

Superman has previously been played on the big screen by the late American actor Christopher Reeve, American actor Brandon Routh and, most recently, British actor Henry Cavill.
