USMNT announces 26-player roster to face Japan and Saudi Arabia

U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter announced the 26-player roster set to face Japan and Saudi Arabia in the last friendlies before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie headlining.

The players will report to the USMNT training camp in Cologne, Germany this weekend before facing Japan on September 23 at Dusseldorf Arena in Germany and traveling to Murcia, Spain to meet Saudi Arabia on September 27 at Estadio Nueva Condomina.

“As we approach the World Cup, this is another opportunity for us to take a step forward as a group,” Berhalter said. “We have a strong roster and can use these games as a measuring stick against World Cup opponents as we continue to gain valuable experience ahead of going to Qatar.”

These friendlies will be a final test for players to secure their ticket to Qatar. The head coach made some surprising choices for the squad, replacing goalkeeper Zack Steffen with NYCFC figure Sean Johnson and bringing in the highly requested Joe Scally.
