Chelsea have spoken with Luis Campos as part of their search for a new sporting director, 90min understands.
Former Blues chief Marina Granovskaia left the club shortly following Todd Boehly’s takeover, leaving the new co-owner to operate as interim sporting director during the summer transfer window, in which he spent close to £300m to bolster his new squad.
The plan was always to find a more-experienced head to take over from Boehly once the dust from the transfer window had settled and now Chelsea are focused on sorting out their recruitment team – a process in which new manager Graham Potter will help.
Sources have confirmed to 90min that a number of candidates are under consideration for the role, and talks have been held with Campos – with Chelsea more than impressed with his work rebuilding Paris Saint-Germain’s squad this summer.
Campos is free to speak with other clubs as he does not have an exclusive contract with PSG and is instead employed as a football advisor, in a similar fashion to Manchester United’s plan for Ralf Rangnick earlier this summer.
PSG are, however, keen to offer Campos a formal contract to keep his highly valued services for themselves.
Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey and Toby Cudworth bring you a brand new episode of Talking Transfers. The team discuss the fallout from the summer transfer window, Gavi’s contract situation at Barcelona, Chelsea’s midfield issues, Antony’s suitability at Man Utd and more. Portugal native Campos, who made his name overseeing Monaco and Lille’s recent Ligue 1 title triumphs, enjoyed a busy summer at Parc des Princes as he helped organise deals for Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Carlos Soler, Renato Sanches, Hugo Ekitike and Nordi Mukiele – the latter of whom was subject to a late approach from Chelsea.
At Stamford Bridge, Boehly is holding talks with a number of high-profile candidates as he seeks to build a dominant recruitment department.
Potter and his transfer chief Kyle Macauley will both have a significant say in who gets the job, with Boehly looking to create a strong link between the manager and the board to try and build a squad in Potter’s vision, similar to the strategies employed by Liverpool and Manchester City with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola respectively.
