Manchester United midfielder Jackie Groenen is not pushing to leave the club in the final days of the summer transfer window, but has acknowledged that there is interest in her from other clubs.
Paris Saint-Germain, who can offer Champions League football, have been particularly linked with the Netherlands international. A recent report in France claimed that Groenen has agreed a deal in principle with the European giants, but United have been unwilling to sell.
Yet Groenen, who agreed to join United in 2019 shortly before a starring role at that summer’s World Cup and has been a fan favourite since day one in Manchester, remains happy at the club and isn’t expecting to leave before the transfer deadline closes on Thursday. That is despite United again missing out on Champions League qualification for this season.
“As far as I know, I’m staying at Manchester United,” Groenen told ESPN.nl while on international duty. “There was interest and there is interest, but I’m in a good place in Manchester for the time being. Although the transfer window is still open.”
In the hunt for a top three WSL place, United manager Marc Skinner has been determined to build depth and equip himself with extra options this summer, particularly in midfield and attack. The recruitment done has achieved that and now isn’t the time to let players go.
Tom Garry of the Daily Telegraph has reported that United would only consider selling Groenen at this late stage of the transfer window if there was an opportunity to upgrade. While it is impossible to rule anything out, that seems highly unlikely in the current market.
Groenen remains under contract at United for one more year but could have the option to leave the club as a free agent in the summer of 2023.
Having added seven new players to the squad and enjoyed the benefit of a first full pre-season under the current boss, United begin their 2022/23 WSL campaign in the hunt for a Champions League place away at Tottenham on Saturday.
