Mariah Carey clarified that when she called Meghan Markle a “diva,” she meant the comment in an “empowering” way.
After tweeting that she “really enjoyed” talking to the Duchess of Sussex in Tuesday’s episode of the “Archetypes” podcast, the “Hero” singer addressed the awkward moment.
“Yes! I called her a diva, in the most fabulous, gorgeous, and empowering meaning of the word!!!” Carey wrote.
The Grammy winner, 53, made headlines earlier this week for calling out Markle’s “diva moments” during their interview, which admittedly made the “Suits” alum, 41, start “to sweat” and “squirm” in her chair.
Markle asked her guest, “What kind of diva moments did I give you?”
The former actress pointed out her “nervous laughter” when she wrapped up the episode later on, saying Carey “jumped right in to make sure I was crystal clear that when she said diva, she was talking about the way I dress, the posture, the clothing.”
While Markle initially experienced the moment as a “dig,” she later came to understand that the musical icon was paying her a “compliment.”
Carey did clarify at the time that she was describing Markle’s “visuals,” noting she did not “mean anything” by the diva comment and was just “playing” with the podcast host.
The biracial stars also discussed their natural hair struggles on the show, with the “Meaning of Mariah Carey” author saying that “nobody knew how to do [her] hair, even as a little girl.”
Carey recalled her hair being “shellacked” and slicked with “too much product” by professional stylists over the years.
As for Markle, she reflected on getting her grandma to help her take care of her “so thick and so curly” hair as a kid.
