Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen are going through a rough patch after 13 years of marriage and two children together.
Page Six exclusively reported in September 2022 that Bündchen recently left their home in Tampa, Fla., for Costa Rica after a series of arguments, while Brady has remained behind for NFL training.
“There’s been trouble in the marriage over his decision to un-retire,” one source told us. “Gisele has always been the one with the kids. They had agreed he would retire to focus on the family, then he changed his mind.”
Take a look at the couple’s relationship timeline below.
Best blind date
When the supermodel was set up on a blind date with the professional football player in December 2006, she “knew right away” that he was the one.
“The moment I saw him, he smiled and I was like, ‘That is the most beautiful, charismatic smile I’ve ever seen!’” she recalled to Vanity Fair in March 2009.
Bombshell baby
Although Brady split from his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan prior to meeting Bündchen, he found out in early 2007 that he and the actress had conceived a baby before breaking up. Their son, Jack, arrived that August.
Bündchen reflected on the “surprise” pregnancy in her 2009 Vanity Fair interview, noting that the “very challenging situation” was a “wake-up call” for the new couple, who had only been dating for two months at the time.
Ultimately, she called the shock a “blessing,” explaining, “It made me feel more in love with him; it made me realize who he was. Our relationship has become so much stronger, and I think I wouldn’t be as certain as I am today if it weren’t for that.”
Wedding bells
Brady and Bündchen tied the knot in February 2009 in a Santa Monica, Calif., ceremony, weeks after getting engaged. They planned the small wedding in just 10 days.
“I think there was really something special about just having our parents there,” the athlete told GQ in November 2009. “We went back to the house and I barbecued aged New York strips. We had champagne, a cake, some ice cream. It was a great night.”
Baby boy bliss
In December 2009, Bündchen gave birth to their first child together, a baby boy named Benjamin.
Despite Brady initially vetoing his wife’s decision to have a home birth, she told him that he did not “get to choose.”
The New England Patriots legend appreciated her decision, saying in “ESPN+’s Man in the Arena: Tom Brady” in December 2021 that the major moment “lives in [his] mind.” He gushed, “We brought this boy into the world in the most precious way.”
Benjamin’s baby sister
Vivian was born in December 2012 in another home birth.
“We feel so lucky to have been able to experience the miracle of birth once again and are forever grateful for the opportunity to be the parents of another little angel,” the couple wrote via Facebook at the time, calling the infant “healthy and full of life.”
Football fans
Bündchen supported her husband’s football career consistently over the years, cheering from the sidelines for multiple Super Bowl wins.
“We are so proud of you daddy!!” she wrote via Instagram after Brady took the trophy home in February 2015. “Congratulations!!!”
Two years later, Bündchen gave her partner a necklace to protect him on the field.
“She’d be really happy that I’m wearing it because she doesn’t like anyone hitting me,” Brady told press in January 2017. “She always says, ‘Throw the ball really fast, really fast.’ So that’s what I try to do.”
As for pre-game sex, Brady told Dax Shepard in a September 2020 “Armchair Expert” podcast episode that getting intimate with Bündchen before playing was “off the table.”
He joked, “That wouldn’t be my pre-game warm-up.”
Setting the record straight
The couple denied divorce rumors in September 2015, with Brady confirming to a Boston radio station that he and Bündchen were in “a great place.”
He added, “I’ve been very blessed to have an incredible relationship with my life partner, and I don’t think anything will ever get in the way of that.”
Career concerns
Although Bündchen told Ellen DeGeneres in December 2018 that she did not plan to retire from modeling until the “day [she] die[s],” she shared her wishes for Brady to step back from the football field.
The former Victoria’s Secret Angel noted that she had not been “very successful” in convincing him to throw in the towel — even after recruiting Brady’s former teammate Jay Feely to help her out.
Touching tributes
In 2019, the duo honored each of their birthdays with sweet social media tributes.
“You are the light that illuminates our days!!!” Brady gushed in July of that year. “We love you so much.”
The following month, his partner wrote, “Life is so much better because we can share it with you! Thank you for being our rock, and the avocado to my toast! We love you!”
Back and forth
After playing for the New England Patriots for 20 seasons from 2001 to 2019, Brady spent a season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He retired in February 2022 — only to announce his NFL return weeks later.
“Here we go again!” Bündchen wrote via Instagram in March. “Let’s go lovvvey! Let’s go Bucs!”
Brady thanked his “supportive family” at the time for making his dreams “possible.”
Keeping it candid
Amid his career transitions, Brady admitted in April 2020 that Bündchen had accused him of not “doing [his] part” a couple years prior, saying he had to “check” himself when she became unsatisfied in their marriage.
“She felt like I would play football all season and she would take care of the house, and then all the sudden when the season would end, that I’d be like, ‘Great, let me get into all my other business activities. Let me get into my football training,’” he explained to Howard Stern. “And she’s sitting there going, ‘Well, when are you going to do things for the house? When are you going to take the kids to school and do that?’”
Bündchen elaborated on their dynamic in a May 2022 British Vogue interview, saying that raising children with the quarterback was not a “fairy tale.”
She said, “It takes work to be really in sync with someone, especially after you have kids.”
The following month, Brady shared his plans to be “better” about balancing football with his family.
Sign of the times
In August 2022, rumors swirled that Brady was taking an 11-day leave of absence from the Buccaneers for a stint on “The Masked Singer.”
The University of Michigan grad, however, told press that his break was for “personal” reasons, adding, “Everyone’s got different situations they’re dealing with. We all have really unique challenges to our life. I’m 45 years old, man. There’s a lot of s–t going on.”
That same month, Bündchen wished her husband a happy birthday via Instagram, calling him “the most focused, disciplined and fashionable person” she knows.
“You are so loved and we are always here cheering for you and wishing you all the most wonderful things in life!” she continued.
A rough patch
Page Six broke the news in September 2022 that there was trouble in paradise for Bündchen and Brady as she left their home for Costa Rica.
“Tom and Gisele are in a fight right now,” a source told us, adding that this has happened before with the couple, but they have always reunited in the past.
A second insider added, “They have a fiery relationship. Gisele is a bit hot-headed — she has that Brazilian heat!”
