Since April 27 of this year, the New York Yankees had been the team at the top of the American League.
That is, until yesterday, when the Houston Astros defeated the Texas Rangers by a final of 7-3, improving their record to 72-41 on the season.
With that, the Yankees no longer hold the top spot in the American League.
That now belongs to the defending AL champion Astros.
The Yankees have been sliding a little bit, while the Astros have gotten hot.
MLB on FOX tweeted yesterday about what the Astros have recently accomplished, knocking the Yankees out of the top spot, at least for the time being.
With today’s win, the @astros now have the best record in the American League.

Houston Takes Over
This is big for the Astros, especially given how long the Yanks were at the top, but it’s far from over.
It’s going to be a tight race for the top spot in the AL for the rest of the season.
The Yankees have fallen on some hard times, while the Astros have taken their position.
Houston has the top spot for now, but it’s going to be a dogfight between these two teams for American League supremacy.
Perhaps another meeting in the ALCS is in the cards.
These two teams met in the ALCS in 2017 and in 2019, with the Astros winning both times, beating the Yankees in seven the first time, and in six in 2019.
These two teams have been the best in the American League all season long.
It’s not over yet.
In fact, we’re just getting started.
It’s going to be fun to watch these two ballclubs battle it out for the top seed in the AL over these final two months of the season.
