The NBA just made the unprecedented move of retiring the number of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell.
In the future, no players will wear number six on their jerseys as a sign of respect for the late, great Russell.
However, there are currently more than a dozen players in the league rocking the No. 6 – so what happens to them?

Take LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, for example, he has been wearing it since the start of last season.
And because he has been grandfathered into the new plan, he will not have to give up the number until he retires, changes it on his own, or switches to another team.
That means that James will be one of the last players ever to wear the number six jersey.
Say Goodbye To Six
There are others throughout the NBA with No. 6 on their jerseys.
For example, Alex Caruso wears it, as does Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Kristaps Porzingis, and others.
They will all be able to keep that number but if they decide to change it or they move to another team, it will be off-limits.
This means that the number will slowly be phased out over the next few seasons and in the near future, it will be totally gone.
The decision to retire the number was something novel that many were calling for.
It was the least the NBA could do to respect Russell.
But it won’t be the last thing that is done in his honor: you can expect quite a few celebrations and memorials to Russell when the new season begins.
As for his number, anyone wearing it will work hard to live up to Russell’s legacy and make him proud.
