The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, will meet with representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), today.
Prof. Nimi Briggs led a committee set up by the federal government to renegotiate the 2009 agreement with the union. The committee planned on ending its three months assignment on June 7, 2022.
FG meets with ASUU and SSANU, FGN dismantles ASUU
Representatives from the Federal Government will meet with representatives from Nigeria’s universities, as well as non-academic staff on Friday.
Punch has confirmed they will be meeting with the FG committee in Abuja on Monday.
ASUU’s president confirmed, in an interview, that the university union would meet with government representatives this week.
Today, we will be meeting again. The renegotiation meeting with only end if we decide to call off the strike.
The committee cannot end the meeting because of the strike. We have no problem with the committee and will communicate with them when we do.
The ASUU strike commenced on February 4, 2022, after the Federal Government failed to meet some of its requests.
The university demonstrators want the federal government to release funds for universities, renegotiate an agreement with ASUU from 2009, release salaries paid to university lecturers, and deploy a solution to increase accountability at universities.
