Tems doesn’t even really have a lot of songs.
She has two EP’s, one released in 2020 and the other in 2021. She has maybe two or three known songs before that. Add that to her collaborations with WizKid, Drake, Future, and a couple of others. And that’s all.
Tems is indeed not as prolific as fans would like her to be. Her mates are dropping bangers every other month, but she’s going half a year without a single. Perhaps that’s okay. Maybe we’ll get bored of her if she were to start releasing the way some of her counterparts do.
What she decides to do is up to her, ultimately. But, she’s everywhere now and people are actually paying attention to her. She just got eight nominations at the Headies and three BET nominations. That’s big for a new artist, honestly.
However, what’s worrisome is the fact that all of these accolades have come from her work on one song, “Essence.” Remove that one song from her career, and it totally tanks. It’s not supposed to be that way. Especially since “Essence” isn’t exactly hers.
Most people who know anything about music in Nigeria know Tems very well by now. She’s an absolute sensation. But I doubt that majority of those people can list three of her songs without mentioning “Essence.”
Her last hit, “Damages” came almost two years ago, and she hasn’t followed up with anything since. That’s even though she’s hot and on top of the charts and all.
Without dropping new songs, though, it’s only a matter of time before she stops being on the charts for real. The hype wouldn’t last more than a few years, and that’s it.
Quite frankly, it’s a miracle that she has come this far with just that one song with WizKid. Most artists would have stopped being hot by now if all they had was one song from 2020.
Tems isn’t bad. When she tries, she can make music that can appeal to fans, both home and abroad. She’s done songs like “Try Me,” “Crazy Tings,” and “Damages,” so yeah, she’s good enough. She just needs to start putting out that music. Or else.
