One Sodiq Oladele has been arrested while allegedly on his way to carry out a robbery operation in Ota area of Ogun State.
The 27-year-old armed robbery suspect was with other members of his gang, who fled after sighting the police.
Police said Oladele was arrested at Obasanjo Farm junction in Ota, with “a black bag containing two locally-made pistols, one live cartridge and assorted criminal charms.”
The police spokesman in Ogun, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Monday, said the suspect was apprehended after he was sighted by the police on a motorcycle conveying three men.
According to Oyeyemi, the DPO of Onipanu division, CSP Bamidele Job and his men were on routine patrol when they noticed the men on bike.
“The motorcycle was flagged down but the passengers quickly jumped down and ran to different direction.
“They were hotly chased by the policemen and one of them, Sodiq Oladele, who was in possession of a black bag, was apprehended while others escaped,”
Oyeyemi explained.
He told newsmen that the suspect, while being interrogated, “confessed that he and his fleeing colleagues were on their way to carry out a robbery operation.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspect should be immediately transferred to state CIID, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
Bankole also ordered that other members of the gang must be hunted for and brought to book.
