Rita Waeni Muendo, a 20-year-old, was a third-year student at JKUAT (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology).
Rita was found murdered in an apartment in Roysambu, specifically near TRM (Two Rivers Mall), on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
The perpetrators sent a message to Rita’s father on the same day, demanding a ransom of Ksh500,000 (Kenyan Shillings) within 24 hours for her release.
The family reported the ransom demand to the police, and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) got involved in the case.
Two additional messages were sent to the family, continuing the ransom demand. However, the family did not receive further details or an opportunity to negotiate.
The family believes that Rita was lured by her killer, who not only took her life but also attempted to extort money from her family.
Rita Waeni Muendo is described by her family as an intelligent, smart, and caring individual who was dedicated to making a positive impact in society. She was known for her kindness, infectious laughter, and ability to light up any room.
Dr. Lilian Mutea, the family spokesperson, released a statement expressing the devastating loss and shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Rita’s disappearance, ransom demand, and subsequent murder.
This is a heartbreaking situation, and we hope that justice is served for Rita Waeni Muendo and her family.
