What Davido Featuring On The FIFA World Cup Soundtrack Means For The Industry

At a time when the foreign committees won’t give us our flowers for our impactful music, we turn to our other success from around the world for validation.
Recently, Davido was featured on the Qatar 2022 World Cup official soundtrack. While the song isn’t anything Nigerian, it is a testament to what Nigerians can do outside of here.

On global stages, Nigerians have continued to perform, raking numbers in abroad and attaining a status previously unattainable by African acts.

With artists like WizKid and CKay setting records on the Billboard Charts, and Burna Boy winning a Grammy all by himself, it’s a whole different ball game for Africans on the global level and we can say we are getting there.

Davido’s place in that globalization have always been disputed as he’s the major artist who has had the least success abroad, with his first-ever international foray with “Son of Mercy” in 2016 flopping hard. Davido has since rebranded himself as a fully Nigerian artist and this has brought him more success than most others have enjoyed.

Suddenly appearing on the FIFA soundtrack in 2022 doesn’t just mean something for his career, it means something for the whole industry.

What Does It Mean For The Industry?
The first thing it tells us is that artists other than WizKid can enjoy success on an international level if they work hard enough for it.

Before now, Davido fans used to be envious of all of Wizkid’s accolades and they probably still are. But the truth is Davido just isn’t working enough to conquer those markets. If anything, this FIFA co-sign means he can do if he wants to, and so can any other artist.

Secondly, Davido’s inclusion on the FIFA soundtrack means that our music is in demand. If it wasn’t Davido, believe me, it would have been some other Nigerian artist. And this should inspire more African artists to go out and lobby for gigs that were previously unavailable to them.

Lastly, I think Davido is actually bigger than that soundtrack. Considering the other two artists on it were upcoming acts in their countries.

There’s a difference between Davido on a track alongside Drake and him on a track with some unknown American artist. Something just ain’t right about that selection and I actually wish more people would talk about that.

All in all, it’s a win for Davido and a win for the industry at large. This probably puts him on the same level as Wizkid again, or does it?

Well, let’s hear from you.
