“Shut down the National Assembly. Who are you legislating for when the country is running in blood?” — Alhassan Ado Doguwa

A lawmaker has called for the shutdown of the National Assembly over the worsening insecurity across Nigeria, warning that legislative business has become meaningless while citizens continue to lose their lives daily.

Speaking during a plenary session at the Nigerian House of Representatives, Rep. Alhassan Ado Doguwa urged lawmakers to take what he described as the “supreme cost” by suspending legislative activities until the Federal Government takes decisive action to protect lives and property across the country.

    Call for legislative emergency
Doguwa argued that the primary responsibility for security lies with the Federal Government, stressing that the scale of violence nationwide demands extraordinary measures from lawmakers who represent affected communities.

“If the government is not prepared to actually do the right thing that will protect the lives and property of our people, I urge this honourable House to stand up and pay the supreme cost, which is to shut this House down and wait until the right thing is done,” he said.

Insecurity cuts across religion and politics
The lawmaker dismissed claims that Nigeria’s insecurity crisis is driven by religion, politics or ethnicity, describing it instead as a coordinated attempt to weaken the Nigerian state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“This insecurity is not religious, it is not political, and it has nothing to do with tribe. It is a calculated attempt to demoralise the Nigerian state, and if care is not taken, all of us will have questions to answer,” Doguwa stated.

‘The country is running in blood’
He further questioned the relevance of lawmaking amid widespread violence, hunger and fear across communities.

“Declare a legislative emergency. Close the House. Who are you legislating for? What laws are you making when the country is running in blood and tears?” he asked.

“Farmers cannot go to their farms, traders cannot go to the market, and worshippers cannot go to churches or mosques. So what exactly are we doing here?”

The remarks underscore growing pressure on the Tinubu administration to address insecurity as attacks continue to disrupt livelihoods nationwide.
