Marcus Rashford is highly unlikely to return to Manchester United despite the sacking of Ruben Amorim, with a new report indicating that his loan move to Barcelona was driven by club hierarchy decisions rather than the former head coach.
Rashford joined Barcelona on loan last summer and has impressed in Spain, registering seven goals and 11 assists across all competitions.
While his output has slowed in recent weeks, with just one assist in his last six La Liga appearances, his overall campaign has been viewed internally as a success.
Hierarchy, not Amorim, took the call
According to The Sun, United’s decision to loan out Rashford, alongside Rasmus Højlund, André Onana and Jadon Sancho, was not led by Amorim.
Instead, it formed part of a broader strategic call by senior club executives. As a result, Amorim’s departure has not altered United’s stance, and a January recall is not currently under consideration.
Rashford open to staying at Barcelona
Rashford has publicly expressed a desire to remain at Barcelona if possible, citing the club’s winning culture and high expectations.
“What I want is to stay at Barca. It’s the ultimate goal,” Rashford said. “The purpose is to win. Barca is a huge, fantastic club, built to win titles.”
He added that he has settled well both on and off the pitch, praising the environment and clarity of purpose within the squad.
Contrast in managerial perception
During his time at United, Amorim was openly critical of Rashford’s attitude, at one point stating he would rather select the club’s then-63-year-old goalkeeping coach than the England forward if standards were not met.
By contrast, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has publicly endorsed Rashford’s professionalism and mindset, highlighting his team-first attitude even when not starting matches.
Focus on silverware in Spain
Rashford now turns his attention to potential silverware, with Barcelona facing Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup before key fixtures against Real Sociedad in La Liga and Slavia Praha in the Champions League.
Barcelona currently sit four points clear at the top of La Liga, reinforcing Rashford’s belief that he is in the right environment to compete for major honours.
