Prince Harry, Meghan Markle pay somber tribute to Queen Elizabeth after her death

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle subtly honored Queen Elizabeth II who died at age 96 on Thursday.

Harry, 37, and Meghan, 41, changed their Archewell Foundation website to one black screen with a simple message written in white lettering.

“In loving memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” the page read, adding the dates of her life, “1926-2022.”

The British Monarchy also changed its website, which normally shares updates on the royal family, to a black interface after her death while “appropriate changes are made.”

“Queen Elizabeth II 1926 – 2022,” the page read, adding a photo of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953.

The website also had the statement the royal family released on Thursday announcing the news.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the statement posted to social media read. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

King Charles III — who automatically became king of the UK and the Commonwealth upon his mother’s death — issued a statement expressing the “greatest sadness.”

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” the statement read in part.

Earlier on Thursday, the late Queen’s relatives rushed to her side after doctors were “concerned” for her health and then placed “under medical supervision” at Balmoral Castle.

Charles and his wife, now Queen Consort Camilla Parker Bowles, and Prince William all made their way to the royal estate late Thursday morning.

Harry appeared saddened when he arrived separately from the others and hours after the Queen passed. Meghan was unable to join her husband, as they were both in Germany promoting the Invictus Games.

Harry and Meghan infamously stepped down from their royal duties in early 2020 and moved to California. Harry has occasionally returned to his homeland – including to attend his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral, the unveiling of his mother Princess Diana’s statue, and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee which Meghan also attended in June.

Meanwhile, William’s wife, Kate Middleton, didn’t travel with her husband, as it was the first day of school for the couple’s children: Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4.
