Today we are gonna be talking about those who pay tithes and offerings to their pastors always but find it difficult to pay back the money they borrowed.
What is tithing? Tithe is a one-tenth part of something, paid as a contribution to a religious organization or compulsory tax to government. Today, tithes are normally voluntary and paid in cash or cheques, whereas historically tithes were required and paid in kind, such as agricultural produce.
Many Christian denominations hold Jesus taught that tithing must be done in conjunction with a deep concern for “justice, mercy and faithfulness” (cf. Matthew 23:23).
Payment of tithe is obligatory to Christian faithful. An Old Testament commandment, it is made popular by Malachi 3:10, where Christians are required to give 10 per cent of their income to God through the priest.
On the other hand, the offering in Christianity is a gift of money to the Church beyond a Christian’s payment of his/her tithes. In Christian worship, there is a part reserved for the collection of donations that is referred to as the offertory.
They claimed that offering is put at the service of the Church, for example for the support of the ministers of God, Pastors or missionaries, building maintenance costs, programs, helping the underprivileged (Christian humanitarian aid).
What the Bible says about tithes:
For it is He who is giving you power to become rich. Bring the tenth part into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the Lord of All. “See if I will not then open the windows of heaven and pour out good things for you until there is no more need.”
What the Bible says about offering:
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
I don’t have much problem with anyone giving his or her money to a fellow human who claimed to be called by God. After all, it is your money and choice. But why haven’t you paid the money you borrowed from a friend?
Owing debt is a sin:
Romans 13:8 “Let no debt remain outstanding except the continuing debt to love on another”. Proverbs 22:7 “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender”. Psalm 37:21 “The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives.”
