Meet Watford’s New Signing, Samuel Kalu

Watford FC has announced the signing of Nigerian international Samuel Kalu on loan from Chelsea, pending work permit approval, according to https://beton.ng/
The 24-year-old defender has reportedly been the subject of interest from the likes of West Ham and Arsenal in recent years but has now put pen to paper on a deal that will see him remain at Vicarage Road until at least mid-January 2022 (via WatfordFC). I can’t wait to get started, said Kalu upon his arrival at the club. It feels really good to be here and I just want to get going now.

Who is he?
Born in Jos, Nigeria, to a South African father and a Nigerian mother of Igbo origin (South-East), Sam started playing football at 2 years old.

He moved to Norway with his family when he was 11 after his father got a job offer in Stavanger. Sam grew up there but as a young lad also spent 3 years growing up in Kano where his paternal grandmother lives.

At 16 he joined Manchester City youth academy and made 15 appearances for their reserve team before being signed by Italian club Udinese.

Here he made 38 appearances including several starts and scored 6 goals before returning to England with Burnley last year.

What will he bring to Watford?
The 24-year-old has all of the qualities that we look for in a young player. He’s intelligent and a good reader of space which means he’s excellent at finding space to operate as well as creating space for his teammates.

He can play on either wing or behind a striker so he gives us real flexibility in how we set up for games and I think he’ll do very well here.

His range of passing is also very impressive – there are few players at his age who can deliver such quality balls consistently – and with Deulofeu likely to be one of our main creative outlets from wide areas that will give him plenty of opportunities to impress.
