Mbappe leads Real Madrid six-goal rout against Monaco

Real Madrid produced a thrilling performance at the Santiago Bernabéu, sweeping aside AS Monaco in a high-tempo Champions League victory that effectively sealed their place in the round of 16.

The win marked a successful European debut for head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, with Los Blancos delivering a response that quickly eased tensions following a frustrating domestic outing at the weekend.

Madrid struck early and never relinquished control, combining ruthless attacking play with sharp movement in wide areas to overwhelm the visitors.

    Fast start sets the pattern
The hosts took the lead inside five minutes through Kylian Mbappé, who finished calmly from the edge of the area after a slick move involving Franco Mastantuono and Federico Valverde down the right.

The early goal set the tone, with Madrid maintaining a high pressure and repeatedly exploiting space on the counter.

Monaco showed brief attacking intent, carving out chances through Ansu Fati and Folarin Balogun, but both failed to capitalise.

Thibaut Courtois was tested but largely untroubled as Madrid’s sporadic press in midfield allowed the visitors moments of possession without real end product.

    Quality tells before the break
The decisive moment of the first half arrived just before the half-hour mark. A flowing move involving Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Vinícius Júnior ended with Mbappé tapping into an open net, doubling Madrid’s advantage against his former club.

Monaco continued to threaten from distance, with Jordan Teze striking the crossbar, but the hosts carried greater cutting edge.

    Second-half surge completes rout
Any hopes of a Monaco revival were extinguished early in the second half.

Mastantuono added a third with a precise finish into the far corner, becoming Real Madrid’s youngest-ever Champions League scorer.

Vinícius then turned provider again as Thilo Kehrer diverted his cross into his own net before the Brazilian capped his performance with a solo goal, driving inside and finishing powerfully.

Monaco pulled one back through Teze after a rare lapse in Madrid’s buildup play, but it had little impact on the outcome.

Jude Bellingham completed the scoring late on, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing clinically after a through ball from Valverde.

The emphatic win leaves Real Madrid firmly on course for a seeded top-eight finish, while Arbeloa’s first European night in charge delivered a clear statement.
