Nigerian singer Kcee has finally spoken openly about the long-discussed tension between him and highlife star Flavour, offering clarity on what may have sparked the perceived rift.
The speculation around their relationship resurfaced in 2024 after Flavour went online to criticize an unnamed artist for allegedly copying his style. Although no name was mentioned, Kcee publicly responded at the time, warning against gatekeeping Igbo cultural music, a move that intensified talk of a feud.
In a new interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee traced the rift back to their earliest encounter. He revealed that well-known talent manager Soso Soberekon once brought Flavour to him with hopes of securing a record deal. According to Kcee, he was already an established artist at the time and didn’t believe Flavour was the right fit for his label.
“I came into the music industry before Flavour,” he said. “Soso brought him to me years ago to sign him. I told him I couldn’t sign Flavour because I didn’t see the potential then.”
Kcee stressed that his refusal was not personal and that he still doesn’t understand why Flavour may hold anything against him today. He suggested that part of the misunderstanding stems from how some colleagues perceive him.
He noted that his humility has often led people to underestimate his talent. “A lot of my colleagues underrate me, and my humility contributes to that,” he said. “I don’t brag; I don’t need to. Time always proves them wrong.”
According to the singer, many of those who doubted him have since returned to acknowledge his growth and success. “Some of those who doubted me in the past have apologised and admitted they were wrong,” he added.
Kcee’s comments offer new insight into a relationship fans have long speculated about, while his reflections highlight how perceptions in the industry can shift over time.
