Mahama Dubik, the managing director of the Electricity Company Limited, Ghana (ECG), has informed the residents of Somanya that he did not take over the company’s management in order to win over the public.
He claims that if he had gone there with the intention of pleasing people, he would have given the natives waakye or ice cream.

The harsh MD claims that he must make difficult choices in order to meet the deadlines set by the state; as a result, he will not make concessions to those who refuse to pay for the electricity they use.
“There are certain points in time, to be a leader you must stand up and be counted. If I really wanted to please everybody I would be selling waakye or giving people ice cream. I have to make certain tough decisions. I know there are children there doing their WASSCE, I know people have businesses that run on the power but these are the same people since 2014 some of them are not paying and you and I are paying their bills. Why should we continue doing that? What kind of example are we teaching our children? I am saying let’s all stand up and be counted.
He cautioned the residents of Somanya against viewing electricity as a fundamental entitlement. He claims that having access to energy is more like a privilege. This information was provided by Mahama Dubik in an interview with Accra-based Joy News.
“Electricity is a privilege, don’t think for a second that it’s a right,” he said.
