Hunter Schafer shut down speculation that she does not support non-binary people after coming under fire for “liking” a critical Instagram post.
“i hold absolutely no hatred towards non-binary folks,” the “Euphoria” star, who is transgender, wrote in the comments section of her photo dump Tuesday.
Schafer, 23, explained that she simply endorsed an activist’s post and did not mean any harm.
“i agreed with another t-girl’s post in which she pointed out an in-balance in the visibility and space-taken up between non-binary folks and binary trans women (particularly those of color and/or those who have resulted to sex work as a means of survival) that i think deserves attention/ re-evaluation (as far as resources and platforms go) within the LGBTQ+ community,” she clarified.
The actress then doubled down, assuring fans she is “not a trans medicalist,” meaning she does not agree with the idea that “being transgender or transsexual is contingent upon experiencing gender dysphoria or requiring medical treatment to transition,” according to Wikipedia.
“my ideology around transness does not align with transmedicalism, nor a disdain towards nb identifying people. ❣️,” she concluded her comment.
In August, Schafer received backlash after she “liked” a netizen’s post blaming the non-binary community for conservative legislation that deems hormone replacement therapy and gender-affirming surgery not medically necessary in Florida.
“For the last time I am begging non binary people to take a seat and let binary trans people and more specifically black trans women be the voices of the community because they are the ones at risk,” the controversial post read.
Several critics accused Schafer of having white privilege after seeing she commented “!!!!!” on the post.
“hunter schafer hating nonbinary ppl was not on my bingo card but is SO rich white woman of her but Also rooted in the idea that nonbinary people are just ‘trans-lite’ and therefore are less deserving of affirming care and that’s a very harmful mentality that we need to disable <3,” one person tweeted at the time.
“a white woman is a white woman before anything else. hunter schafer, regardless of being trans, has chosen to align herself with white and/or cis people and place blame on nonbinary people. its very easy to pick a scapegoat instead of challenge your own internalized transphobia,” another added.
Schafer is currently dating “Euphoria” co-star Dominic Fike.
