Hosts denied by controversial VAR call

Newcastle United were denied all three points against Crystal Palace after Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal was controversially ruled out by VAR.

An entertaining and open game finished 0-0 at St James’ Park but questions will be asked of how technology is used, with the collision involving Joe Willock and Vicente Guaita seemingly, judging by the replays, caused by a push from Mitchell.

The hosts had 23 shots in total, six of them target, while Palace notched 19 of their own – an indication of the open, expansive game on offer in the North East.

Nick Pope was the busier of the two keepers in all, keeping the likes of Jean-Philippe Mateta, Odsonne Edouard and Wilfried Zaha at bay – albeit in relatively tame circumstances – but the game’s really big chances fell to Newcastle.

Alexander Isak, who opened his account in emphatic fashion against Liverpool in midweek, misfired when he got his attempted dink over Guaita completely wrong, while Joe Willock somehow contrived to missed from two yards out late-on when it looked easier to score.

Miguel Almiron also hit the post for Newcastle, but it’s a fifth game without a win for Eddie Howe’s side, who kicked off their campaign with three points against Nottingham Forest.

Crystal Palace are on six points from their first six games, though they have also tasted success just once this season.
