Giovani Lo Celso returns to Villarreal on loan

Giovani Lo Celso has completed a return to Villarreal on loan, thought the Spanish side have no optional or mandatory purchase clause with Tottenham.

The Argentine has fallen out of favour at Spurs and spent the second half of last season on loan with El Submari Groguet, scoring once in 22 appearances.

Lo Celso impressed in La Liga during his time with Real Betis, scoring nine league goals in 2018/19 to convince Tottenham to sign him initially on loan before making it permanent for around £45m.

A Spurs statement reads: “Giovani Lo Celso has joined La Liga side Villarreal on loan for the 2022/23 season.

“The Argentina midfielder made 19 appearances for us in all competitions in 2021/22 before departing for Villarreal on loan in January, where he played 22 times.

“Giovani joined us from Real Betis in 2019 and has made 84 appearances in our colours to date, scoring eight goals.”

However, injuries often halted his progress and some poor performances saw him called upon less and less by former Spurs managers Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo. He barely got a look in under Antonio Conte last year before being sent on loan.
