Cubs Ownership Tries To Give Fans Hope For 2023

The 2022 season hasn’t gone as planned for the Chicago Cubs.

After rebuilding last year at the deadline, the Cubs made several offseason acquisitions that invited fans to dream about returning to relevancy in a year or two.

That hasn’t been the case, though.

At 45-65, the Cubs are much closer to last place in the NL Central (one game) than to the second-placed team.

A lot has gone wrong in Chicago, but it’s important to acknowledge that they are still a top franchise with a huge fanbase and lots of national and international exposure this year and next.

“The Cubs are in Iowa today, London next year. Fans still jam Wrigley. They’re a marquee franchise with a terrible record. Owner Tom Ricketts: ‘I’ll be the first to acknowledge this is not the type of baseball Cubs fans deserve,’” ESPN’s Jesse Rogers tweeted after talking to the Cubs’ boss.

Cubs Fans Expect More

Ownership and the front office know fans expect more, and because of that, they stated they will be active, once again, in the offseason while looking for roster improvements.

“More from ownership: ‘Our moves over the past year…have put us in a position of strength in both player and financial currency. We plan to be very active again this offseason competing in the free agent market,” Rogers also tweeted.

They should have traded Willson Contreras before risking losing him for nothing, at least to get a mid-level prospect back.

Instead, they kept him.

Unless they can re-sign him, keeping him looks like a mistake.
