Ayra Starr Is A Better Artist Than Tems By Far — Do You Agree?

Despite Tems’ commercial exploits, it is not hard to see why some people think she’s overrated.
Before 2020 and Wizkid’s “Made in Lagos,” Tems was just another unknown alte artist who does songs for Show Dem Camp.

But after that outing with WizKid which ended with a Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit in “Essence,” Tems has become sort of a force to reckon with in the Nigerian music industry.

Last year, Drake tapped her for a song off his sixth studio album, “Certified Lover Boy,” and not too long ago Future featured her on a song that debuted at No. 1 on the US Hot 100 charts.

With all these achievements, it will be very stupid to say Tems hasn’t got something. She does have something and that’s why she’s on the charts while so many others aren’t. But whether what she has is good enough or she just happens to be lucky will forever remain a debate.

What I think is not debatable though, is the fact that she’s not the best there is in the industry right now. We don’t even have to look very far. Ayra Starr, who has been compared to Tems on an artistic level, is a much better artist than Tems as far as music is concerned.

She debuted in 2021 with a self-titled EP and she has shown us that she’s got talent. She has also done her part in settling the Tems debates by doing what she does.

Ayra Starr has hits, and not just songs that made it to the Billboard, no. But songs that people, real fans on the streets of Nigeria, actually vibe to.

Tems doesn’t have that at all. The closest she came to making a local hit on her own was “Damages” and it was still too alternative to make it a smash across the country.

Not just that, but Ayra Starr has a certain kind of versatility to her sound. Such that she could flow with anybody and she could do any kind of music if she wanted to. Her debut album, “19 & Dangerous” had her experimenting with all kinds of sounds, including trap and hip-hop.

Tems, on the other hand, has not really been able to convince us that she can do more than the alternative R&B she does. Maybe she can, or maybe she can’t. It doesn’t matter.

What matters now is that based on what we have, Ayra Starr is a better artist than Tems. And it’s not even close!
